"Hot" Items in the Future Empty "Hot" Items in the Future

Post by Nkomo Tue Oct 12, 2010 1:44 pm

Okay....I've been thinking about this topic lately. As collectors of OEF/OIF militaria, we are on the ground floor of the hobby. Right now, stuff is relatively cheap in comparison with WW2, Vietnam, WW1, etc.

My questiuon for you is what items do you think will be worth the most in the future?

Having asked that question, I know we don't collect for value or worth. Most of us collect to preserve history. I don't want this topic to devolve into a history vs. worth debate. I am just interested in hearing opinions on what you think are going to be the "hot" items in the future.

Okay...I'll start. I think the following will be the hot items:
    1. Theatre made patches
    2. ANYTHING Special Forces
    3. Patched helmet covers and helmets
    4. ID'd combat groupings

    1. Modified uniforms (especially SF)
    2. In-theatre base items (flags, signs, etc.)
    3. Personally-camo'd combat helmets
    4. Anything even remotely associated with SF

    Just my opinions.

Think of it this way -- many of us already have a leg up in the field. Cool

I personally think we have seen prices on DCU's climb to where they will be steady or decline a little in the near future. I am seeing a lot of common DCU's on Ebay either not selling or selling for only a few dollars. SF and 173rd ABN are a couple of exceptions.

Patches really blow my mind. They are steadily climbing in price and they always seem to sell quickly on the forums. That is why I picked patches as my number one "hot" item to increase in price in the future.

Special Forces items have held their value from the time of their inception regardless if it is a uniform, beret, helmet, gear, etc.. Look at how much ID'd Nam era SF items gor for. affraid Even 80's era SF items go for decent money as well.

Contractor items. Interesting that you brought that one up. Contractor items are going to be a nightmare in the future. Many times, contractors didn't wear a standardized uniform. They wore civilian clothing and wore numerous different kinds of protective gear and vests. ALSO....Blackwater also had it's own line of gear. Was this ever used by BW operators? Can't say for 100% certainty, but that gear was made for the civilian market in the US. To add to the confusion even more, contractor impressions are a popular theme with air-softers. Don't even get me started on SF items. Laughing

Provenance is the key to any item, but it is even more important to get with SF and Contractor items. However, I do agree with your assessment of Contractor items.

Funny story, a lot of the air-soft teams in the Phillipines are big into Blackwater items. They were the shirts and caps around town. Be wary of any Blackwater items coming out of the Phillipines. Good chance of it being fake.

    Here's what I think :

    1. Personalized items (arabic embroidery, theater made patch sew on jacket, modified uniforms, armbands, painted helmet,...) issued or truly used by troops.

--> EXCLUDING some sort of commercial items. By example back pack (with camel or other embroidery), some hats (b.e Bob sponge or other same sort of embroidery only made as commercial junk), some theater made patch that are only commercial and NEVER used.

    2. Grouping if ID

    3. Body armor

    4. ID items

    5. small production items as by example CCU or CU !

Interesting topic. I've been selling patched, named 82nd DCU's on ebay and they've been selling for around $5 with $8 shipping (with one exception, one went for $10) and DCU's seem to be falling. What's scaring me is that the patches themselves seem to be getting more expensive than thier uniforms so I see a problem with dealers stripping the uniforms to get big bucks from the patches and thus the DCU market dries up.

    Andrew,
The good patched DCU's on Ebay are already drying up. Very sad.
