Okay...I picked this used German desert chest rig up recently for $10 at one of my local base shops. I know nothing about this one. It has no tags that I can find and doesn't appear to have ever had any. Definitely been used in a sandy environment. Any clues? German? Private purchase?

I am thinking this may be a commercial piece bought by a soldier.

Re: German Desert Chest Rig?????
This is commercial made for airsofters. There are so many different camo patterns on this rig: OD, Tan, flecktarn, woodland, dpm, three color desert, six color desert, danish flecktarn, etc..... It is a copy based on a geniue British issue chest rig (not sure which company though). I used to have same rig in six color desert camo, after found out it is fake, I sold it to one paintballer.
So yeah, it is possible it has been purchased commercially for one's uses.

This is indeed a commercial chest rig based on an older Arktis design. They make these in several camo patterns, and are sold at places like cheaperthandirt. Id suggest going to cheaperthandirt.com, and subscribing to their catalogue and get familiar with those imported commercial vests so you know what to pass up at the surplus store.

Ehhhh....I only paid $10 for this rig. I am sure I can sell it on Ebay for a few bucks more than I paid for it. Not a big loss in the whole scheme of things.

Re: German Desert Chest Rig?????
What really got me about this piece was that the shop I bought it from doesn't carry commercial gear like this. This was brought in by a soldier who was selling off his items. It was in their bargain bin of used gear. If this had been at a non-base shop, I would have passed it up. However, since it was in the bargain bin of the base shop and since many soldiers are using commercial items.....I took a chance.

Nice vest! I really like it, and it's definitly commercial. But, we all know that commercial gear has been used just as much, or even more than issue gear during these wars. JKin, Arch is very knowledable about CTD (and other commercial items), and I wouldn't rather have anyone else digging through surplus store piles than him. That being said, I really like this vest and I don't see why it wouldn't have been used "over there".

There is a huge difference between imported commercial gear(excluding theater made gear), and U.S. made commercial gear. One may collect what they want, but personally I always pass up imported commercial gear, regardless of if it was used overseas.

Re: German Desert Chest Rig?????
Big Difference? Not really, most of it ends up in the hands of soldiers somewhere. To each thier own, but don't go raining on someone else's parade just because it isn't what you collect. For example, I have a BDU Strum Rig that was used in Haiti in Operation Unified Response that has dirt from Haiti in it and is pretty ragged out. Used? Yup. By who? An 82nd Soldier. Commercial? Yup. Would I let it go? Never.JKin wrote:There is a huge difference between imported commercial gear(excluding theater made gear), and U.S. made commercial gear. Im not raining on anybodys parade. I know Arch, have exchanged words with him many times, and I know for a fact he has thick enough skin to know not to interpret what I say negatively like that.
A commercially produced, non contract numbered AWS SF chest rig, that is brand spaken new, that has never even been touched by a soldier would fetch at least 5-10 times more than an imported commercial chest rig used by a SMU operator that still has the dead goat smell exuding from it. Ive seen this happen countless times on ebay and forums.
