Canadian Modular Fighting Rigs and Pouches

From the very beginning Canadian troops were unsatisfied with the CADPAT Tactical Vest, some troops deploying to Afghanistan reverted P’82 webbing or commercially available options. This caused great consternation among the command types which issued orders that only official gear was to be used which the troops disobeyed. By the mid 2000s companies such as Hi Speed Gear and Tactical Tailor were producing gear in CADPAT while several Canadian companies collaborated with troops to design and manufacture gear the troops needed. In 2007 command again tried to address the problem by trialing new vests from Fellfab (CADPAT TV), Pacific Safety Products (CADPAT JTF2 TV), and Arktis but the powers that be were wedded to the tactical vest concept so Fellfab and PSP offered modified versions of their existing vest while Arkis’ contribution was a CADPAT version of their chest webbing. This also failed with the troops. After almost a decade of this some troops and veterans began raising concerns with their federal political representatives this raised enough concern that in 2009 the Politicians overrode command and DND issued an order that approved privately purchased gear from 8 companies (see list at end). At the same time DND acquired sample gear sets from 10 to 12 companies and a broad selection of troops, mostly enlisted & junior officers, from all combat trades were assembled for a fit and function trial. At the end of this trial contracts were awarded to SORD Tactical, Tactical Tailor, Hi-Speed Gear, & CTOMS for immediate need/trial gear and has been issued to soldiers rotating to Afghanistan since.
System A SORD Tactical
System A consists of five main components including three front panel assemblies and two back yokes. The front panel assemblies and the back yokes are compatible and interchangeable. Torso Circumferential sizing is accomplished through the number of PALS/MOLLE columns. Torso height adjustment is done through adjustments to the shoulder straps. There is a Front and Back Ballistic Plate carrying capability. System A offers easy donning and doffing via front side release buckles.

System B Tactical Tailor
System B is made of three main components. Main components are a split panel (both left and right) including two supplementary shoulder straps to support the split panel when used alone and a waist strap to support the front panel and stabilize the load, and a back yoke. A collection of matching pouches and equipment holders have also been identified to ensure design compatibility.

System C SORD Tactical
System C consists of two main components. This design consists of a front chest rig panel with a bib style harness which can be worn up or down and accommodate a front ballistic plate. This front panel can be worn on its own. Load capacity can be increased by the addition of the Chest Rig Back panel which can also accommodate a back ballistic plate. A collection of matching pouches and equipment holders have also been identified to ensure design compatibility.
