Can anyone identify these patches? They look like black hearts, but I may be way off. Sorry about the sideways pics.

502nd Infantry from the 101st Smile The patch has actually recently changed though. It is now a round black patch with an outline of a heart in the middle of it in a lighter color.

The original heart shaped patch is most certainly still being worn, en masse, in at least 1-26 IN.

I'm not sure on the change, of that change or the wear-out date of them. Was talking to one of the sew shop ladies as she was sewing the new patch on a helmet cover. She was the source of the info. As we were down at Campbell there were also other patches of the same black circle, but their units with a lighter outline as well. It strikes me as an effort of uniformity on the part of the Army.

This is from 2 weeks ago; multiple Soldiers pictured are wearing the traditional 'heart' patch on the helmet cover. From what I've been able to gather, so is the rest of the Battalion. Maybe it is starting to find it's way onto new helmet covers (perhaps as guys transition from UCP to OCP and need to have items sewn on the new uniforms, who knows). Or maybe 1-26 is doing things differently, or on a different timeline.

Eagles of war has two of the examples I was mentioning above. Looks like what they have listed belong to 1/320 FA and 3BCT DIVARTY. So it is possible the information the sew shop passed along was incorrect. Not surprising for a civilian.

Or maybe it is specific to a FA unit and not a line Infantry unit..? I'll ask and see what I can come up with.

I was at Campbell a few months ago and picked up some new and used helmet patches. Since DIVARTY was reactived and the separate artillery battalions were deactived, the attached artillery units from DIVARTY to each Brigade now have their separate helmet patches.  The "ball" with each brigade symbol is reminiscent of the earlier DIVARTY helmet patches (before DIVARTY deactivation back in '05 I think) and the ball painted on helmets from WW2.  The rest of the infantry units in the brigade still where the black heart.

The top three are the new artillery units in the 327th, 502nd and 187th Infantry Brigades.

Some of the ones I bought...

Awesome footwork on this Plunket. Sorry for the lateness of my reply, but we were just having a discussion about this today, and couldn't find this post. Also didn't realize it was updated! Very Happy
