Post by Easy Gee Sat Jul 09, 2011 10:18 am

    Hi Guys.

SAS eh ?,To be clear , I'm not claiming this is,or is not the real deal SAS Smock, but I think it's an interesting piece nevertheless.

A bit of history...I got this one from an online Militaria Store here in the UK, I have carried out research on this piece, hence I cannot claim it is the real deal, as my research is inconclusive Exclamation

Feel free to comment either way, I would be interested to see what you think about it Wink

This draw cord is attached to the rear of the hood, behind your neck, and is designed to make the hood really snug, I tried it out it works!!

Yup Gary, it's an SAS smock alright, definitely something "they" would wear; 110% accurate. lol!
All kidding aside, I have never seen one of these before... its tag is kind of like the old desert DPM clothing tags, but other than that, I'm stumped.

    Yay for mystery items! Laughing

    Thanks for looking Ben.

I'm not sure about this one at all, obviously I would like it to be an issue piece of kit, but I just can't seem to pin this one down, but that is what I like about these items.....the mystery factor is high on this one.

Oh, well if it takes a while to suss it out, so be it, I'm a patient guy!!!!

Naturally if I find out anything conclusive I will update this post as and when Wink

I will of course be relying on you my fellow Mod to help out on this one Laughing

Mate Im not 100% sure this is an original SAS Desert Smock ? check out the inside manufactuers label as that is NOT a NATO size number plus there are no laundry care instructions ? The layout of the smock especially the left arm is not right. There are some good copies out there and I think this is one of them ?

That's what I was leaning towards as well... the pattern is a little bit spaced out and isn't quite as "speckled" as issue desert DPM; there aren't as many stippling dots on the edges of the shapes as on issue DDPM.

Still a neat piece though! Cool

Thanks to all for their input, and opinions.

Following extensive research this afternoon, I have discovered this is more than likely a commercial piece...bloody annoying because I paid quite a bit for this one Rolling Eyes

Gary, don't feel bad; not long ago, I bought an Auscam DPDU boonie -- I was quite excited, since I love Auscam... it was my first desert Auscam item, and I know how hard that pattern can be to find -- only to get home and find it was a commercial copy. On the tag camouflage was spelled "comouflage"... other than the typo, everything else checked out -- the tag looked legit, the pattern was accurate, but I completely overlooked this one detail. I did some research (courtesy of the Australia section on IACMC) and found this was one of the commonly-circulated commercial fakes out there. The funny thing is, I had seen that reference thread several times before I purchased that hat and should've known better. Live and learn... Embarassed

I don't modify genuine/issued kit from my collection in any way... but upon learning this was a knock-off, I didn't feel bad modifying it; so I cut down the brim all short & ally-like. Makes for a great conversation starter when I wear it hiking or fishing. People find the pattern interesting and can't resist asking about it. Very Happy

We all get stung once in a while I guess, what I might do to "modify" this one,is too attach a genuine SAS badge, that'll make it look totally authentic Rolling Eyes Smile

Thanks Will, this one has turned out to be a dud, but it's a talking point I guess.

It's my fault for thinking it was a bargain, and snapping it up..oh, well you live and learn I suppose Laughing

    Thanks for looking Mate. Wink
