    IR Flags

Post by Misanthropic_Gods on Fri Sep 17, 2010 12:48 am

There are a few different colors of IR flags out there that are used for identification of Friendlies using NVG's, there are Black/Green, Black/Tan, Black/Foliage, Full Color (Also retroreflective)

This is the one Black/Tan version that I have

If you look closely, there is a red hue to the flag, this is because the IR filter of my camera isnt blocking out the IR light all the way. It is invisible to the naked eye, but can be seen while using optical electronics such as cameras or NVG's. There ARE reproductions of these out there, so be careful, but this is the only surefire way I know on how to identify them, sometimes it takes a bit to get the right angle so the IR filter is defeated.

Thanks for contibuting Arch...and I believe the full color one is IR/Retroreflective. The white is the Retroreflective part, and the red and blue are IR

I am not 100% sure, Shane. I have only seen one in person and I think Andrew scarfed it up while we were down at Ft. Bragg.

I wish I had one of the color ones. We both saw one but it was new in the display case.

Here is a shot of a couple of my velcro backed FOF IR color US flags. Regular pattern and and opposed as given to me by an operator. I also have used/worn examples on LBVs, body armor, and older D-Boy modified Woodland BDUs. If this unit really existed there might even be photographic evidence of SFOD-Delta operators wearing these flags (smile). This insignia is still being used by CAG, JSOC, and other "Cool Guys" and the patches are damn hard to find. My thoughts only and enjoy .......

And a 4th Infantry Division SSI type insignia that is IR material on velcro.

Only one I have ever seen. Not sure if it is for a helmet, MP Brassard or something else? In my experience, unusual to find IR items in the form of divisional/unit insignia. My thoughts only .......

Lance, I remember when ACU first get issued, many ACU patches being sold in the supplier catalog like Ranger Joe's. They sold reflective variety of SSI for ACU as well. I have never seen one in use before. Maybe you can start a new thread about the IR/reflective SSI.
