Greeting everyone, I am going through the steps to put together my first mannequin display and was wondering what are some of the correct items one would have for a 10th MTN DIV soldier deployed in response to the Somalia crisis? Here are some of the things that have been real head scratch-ers.

    1) The uniform: 6 color chocolate chip or three color version.

    2) PASGT Kevlar cover: 6 color or modern three color version.

    3) OD subdued name tapes, unit patch, rank, etc or tan versions.

    4) US flag or none.

    5) ALICE webbing or a very early Tactical Load Bearing Vest.

Also here is what I have to work with now, a real early 50/50 cotton-poly blend PASGT Kevlar flak jacket cover in three color desert, and a three color desert Kevlar helmet cover, plus a lot of ALICE gear.

Even though I was there in Somalia in 1993, I was in the Marines so we still were being issued 6 color chocolate chip everything and ALICE gear. Therefore, a lot of Army units had mix match and different items than my unit did. Also, I could use some help if there were some actual folks there-in country about that time, pictures of 10th MTN units, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

    1: 6 color chocolate chips

    2. 6 color choc chips.

    3. OD name tapes, rank, and unit patches, (Tan MP brassards for the 511th MP co)

    4. US flag

    5. ALICE webbing, M-16 Ammo pouches.

Also 6 color chocolate chip PASGT flak vest covers.

Some where I have a picture of two 511th MP's from the 10th Mountain around here somewhere.

    Darktrooper,

Thanks for the insight. Though two questions now come up: I have that three color flak vest. Since you mentioned the 6 color choco chip being the correct one (I have not seen any in my area) what could I possible use that for another time period piece? Were there any other units using that partiuclar flak vest cover at some point. I doubt early OEF, from what I have seen the first generation POINT BLANK body armor was used and even into early OIF.
I could be wrong on both accounts, if so, could anybody provide a picture of the 1980s version KEVLAR vest being used with a vest cover. Thanks

My uniform from my time in Somalia.  The helmet cover, band and goggles are mine, although the helmet itself is one I picked up later (turned in my original when I left the unit).

I recently picked up an old "flack vest" similar to what I wore over there, however am thinking on mounting it to my wall just behind my old uniform.

I wasn't in 10th Mountain (I was with 2d battalion, 5th Special Forces Group), however we shared space with their Long Range Surveillance Detachment at what used to be the U.S. Embassy compound.  I recall these guys wearing the older "chocolate chip" desert uniforms. They wore unit patches and rank on their uniforms, while we wore only our rank (and often not even that).

Photo here is my uniform from my time in the Mog:
