    Current-issue Desert DPM Windproof

Post by Ben on Sun May 09, 2010 8:59 pm

Got this in yesterday, and it's definitely been used. Not sure if it was worn in Iraq or Afghanistan. No ranks, patches or identifying marks of any kind were present.

    Overall shot of smock

Some of the "grody-ness" on the pocket and lower left sleeve

I think I am with DPM like you are with DCUs. lol!
It is very addicting...I started off with one set, and now here I am suddenly with 8, plus 3 combat smocks! And that's just the DPM!Laughing

Very cool parka Ben,I have a couple of these ,and they are brilliant pieces of kit, probably the one the best designs of British clothing, the troops were issed with at the time Cool

BTW-Will,in the UK,these retail in surplus shops for about £35,but you can get them on ebay for about £15,if your lucky.I got one on ebay for £5,but then I was VERY lucky on that occasion...the gods of surplus were smiling on me that day Laughing

Gary's right -- eBay UK can be a great source for these. I picked mine up from SportsmansGuide.com for $29.99. They aren't carrying them at the moment, but do get them time to time. They also ship to Canada, so you're in luck! Cool

I ordered a British field jacket from Sportsman's Guide that had patches on it once... it's the luck of the draw when ordering from them. On eBay you will see fully-patched smocks for sale from time to time. Best thing to do is to just check regularly. Smile

Totally agree Ben,Patched up Windproof's are fairly common on ebay, in fact I would hazard a guess that these windproofs were more than likely to be patched up,more than say,a S95 lightweight Jacket, due to the windproof being an outer garment and on show ...if that makes sense..well it's just a theory and not based on anything other than looking at my kit Laughing Wink

    Hey will.

This sounds very exciting,I look forward to seeing what you got, good old ebay, it's never let me down yet, so hopefully you will get a very cool Windproof.

One point to be aware of is, if your's does have patches on it, do not be dissapointed if the patches are sewn on by hand, as Brit patches are very rarely sewn on by a sewing machine, and will generally have a crappy sewn on appearance, which would have been done, by some sqauddie with 5 minutes on his hands.I know this does not help to authenticate a garment, but unfortunetely, this is a common feature on Brit clothing Wink

90% of my Brit clothing with patches, have hand sewn patches, but I'm comfortable with their authenticity and provenance, so don't let hand sewn patches put you off... Smile

    Hi gary

be sure I will share it to you on the forum.

I didn't know about this point. I thought that the english soldiers sewn on their badges or patches by a tailor store. I didn't know it was a common feature on Brit clothing.

    Thanks for this great information!!!

    No worries Will.

I have double checked all my British kit,and like I say,90% have hand sewn Patches, the only pieces I have ever seen with machine sewn patches are, Royal Navy ( and therefore Royal Marines)all the Army kit has sewn on patches, apart from one S95 jacket that has many patches on it, I deeply suspect this one was sewn up in theatre in Iraq.

Again I fully appreciate that this doe'nt help to fully authenticate an item, but I am convinced that nobody would relly go to the effort of faking an item by sewing on patches,as you can buy them so cheap on ebay anyway with patches already on them.

In fact the vast majority of my Brit desert clothing ,was bought for a couple of quid and they were already patched up...the irony is,that Brit TRF patches are more expensive to buy on their own, than buying a garment with patches already on it!!!!

Point in case, let's say it costs £ 5.00 for a genuine MOD issued TRF patch...I've paid less than that for a jacet with a TRF already sewn on Shocked

British Desert kit is full of mysteries that's for sure Laughing

i was given one of these by a friend of mine who is a serving soldier, its more than likely that its been worn over here on exercise, usually one platoon will use the green dpm and the other will use the desert gear, as was the one he gave me.
