Iraqi helmet article in Military Trader Magazine

Post by ScottG on Fri Jul 26, 2013 12:52 am

I just had this article published in the august Military Trader Magazine. It is basically a guide for some of the more common Iraqi helmets that could be found on e-Bay or at a show. It is not "all inclusive" and only serves to give collectors a common nomenclature when discussing some variants. So with that being said, I thought I would scan it in here for all of you to use or read if you wish.  Scott.

Thanks guys and yes the picture are all of my own items. As I said in the article, its really meant to help identify the more common helmets as well as promote the hobby hopefully. I have another article coming in Sep/Oct on Iraqi berets and their makers and then a third on rank insignia. They have also asked for one on camo uniforms but I may save that for my book... Thanks again guys and glad it was somewhat helpful. Scott.

I read the article when I received my copy of MT. I thought it was a well thought out premier on how to identify Iraqi helmets. That's hard to do in just four pages. I was pleasantly surprised that you were able to get four pages of color, that really enhanced the article.

Thanks Kevin, glad you liked it. I should have mentioned that John and the staff at Military Trader and F+W Media did a great job in supporting the article. John is really supportive of the OEF/OIF collecting fields. As for the color, I was concerned as well and actually tailored my first draft to being in black and white. John told me that they don't really know until they go to print what will be done in color but to shoot for color and I guess it worked. I just hope they do the same with the beret article as it really needs to be in full color.
For those that don't read or subscribe, I would say that you are missing out on some good articles written by fellow collectors and that a year subscription is less than $20.00. These guys truly support this hobby and are deserving of our support as well. Scott.

Does anyone actually HAVE an example of an M92? Up till I read your article, I wasn't even aware that model existed. I found what I believe to be an M92 a few months back at a surplus store. It has several layers of desert tan paint, but the base material is obviously green. I always just figured it was a green variation of the M90.

Just look to see if the outer rivet heads are flat and if there is a Jihm or HHD mark on the inside it could either be raised or stamped into the helmet. Usually they are near the brim but not always. The base color must be green. Finally, as stated in the article, this nomenclature isn't Iraqi but rather a means for collectors to identify variants. I will try to find a good picture for you as well. Scott.

The beret article is out now and John and company did a great job on the layout. It is in full color and it is in the MAX Show special edition of Military Trader. They also used a great shot of Desert Storm troops on the cover. These guys are really trying to support collecting the more recent wars and I encourage everyone who can to support them. Scott

Scott, Congratulations! I just received my issue in the mail this afternoon and am looking forward to reading your article. An article on the 4th ID, "From Ivy to Iron Horse" that I co-authored for the MT, is also in this issue. The first two pages are in B&W but the last page is in color and shows the Vietnam and OIF/OEF period 4th ID patches. I have a number of variations of the desert 4th ID patch but limited space precluded me from including them in the article.

Thanks and congratulations to you as well Kevin. I am really impressed with how the MT folks are supporting the "newer" areas of collecting. I think it helps not only the younger collectors but the hobby as a whole. Giving old school collectors a place to get printed info can only help in the long run. Glad to share some space with you! Thanks Scott.  I just finished reading your article and enjoyed your well crafted discussion of Iraqi berets.  Did you read the "JAG File" in this October issue of MT?  John Adams-Graf discusses collectors of OEF/OIF and mentions our OEF/OIF forum, provides the web address and specifically quotes some of Longbranch's comments here.

I'd known of the Fedayeen helmets beforehand, but never knew what they were made of. Due to the colour and appearance, (and owing to the fact I've only ever seen photos and no physical examples) I'd always thought they were clunky steel helmets... but I have been wrong this whole time! Laughing

Very informative and well-written, Scott. Thanks for sharing this!

I read it when it came out in MT, very well done!  Did you know that you can ask the editor John A-G for a .pdf of your article.  He has provided them for all of the articles I've written.  Including my Patches of the 4th Infantry Division article that's in this same issue as your article.  Kevin

Never thought to ask him for a pdf... He always sends a few magazines to me for friends etc, but a pdf would be easier to post. Thanks,Scott

Scott saw your latest article in the December Military Trader on Rank Insignia of Saddam's Military, congrats! Ironically my article on Collecting Desert Uniform Patches is in that same issue.

I saw yours as well and nicely done I might add. John and staff really seem positive in their efforts to promote this area of collecting. I am working on another involving the Republican Guard. Not sure when it will print, but perhaps we will share space again? Scott

Scott - Thanks, The patch that is my avatar here is also in my article. Your article as always was well written and well researched.  Makes me wish I hadn't turned down all that bring back Iraqi insignia and equipment that prior-service cadets were offering me when I was teaching ROTC right after Desert Storm in the early 1990s.

Yes, John Adam-Graf the MT editor, has been a great supporter of the emerging OEF/OIF collecting field.

I have an article on patches of the 1st Infantry Division written with Al B. that should come out in the MT early next year.
