Gadsden Flag & First Navy Jack in Military

Post by AndrewA74 on Wed Apr 21, 2010 11:51 pm

So, we all know the "DONT TREAD ON ME" and the "LIVE FREE OR DIE" flags. But I found some interesting information about both flags in the sandbox. Take a look at this:

    http://www.gadsden.info/Iraq.html

I was cruising on another site, and I found this:

    http://www.gadsdenandculpeper.com/sunajapa.html

If you notice in one of the photos of the second link there is a US Navy soldier in ACU's wearing the Navy Jack on his Left Sleeve. Very interesting reads. Enjoy.

    Found this story here: http://www.navyjack.info/war.html

The following is the U.S. Navy flag news announcement that all ships will display the rattlesnake flag during the War on Terrorism. It is a reprint of the official directive from the Department of the Navy, Office of the Secretary, Washington, DC.

    SECNAVINST 10520.6
    N09B1
    31 May 2002

    SECNAV INSTRUCTION 10520.6
    From: Secretary of the Navy
To: All Ships and Stations (less Marine Corps field
addressees not having Navy personnel attached)

Subj: DISPLAY OF THE FIRST NAVY JACK DURING THE GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM

    Ref: (a) U. S. Navy Regulations, 1990

    1. Purpose. To provide for the display of the first navy Jack on board all U. S. Navy ships during the Global War on Terrorism.

    2. Discussion. As the first ships of the Continental Navy readied in the Delaware River during the fall of 1775, Commodore Esek Hopkins issued a set of fleet signals. His signal for the "whole Fleet to Engage" the enemy provided for the "strip'd Jack and Ensign at their proper places." Thus, from the very beginning of our Navy, the Jack has been used on board American warships. The first navy Jack was a flag consisting of 13 horizontal alternating red and white stripes bearing diagonally across them a rattlesnake in a moving position with the motto "Don't Tread On Me." The temporary substitution of this Jack represents an historic reminder of the nation's and Navy's origin and will to persevere and triumph.

    2. Action. The first navy jack will be displayed on board all U. S. Navy ships in lieu of the Union Jack, in accordance with sections 1259 and 1264 of reference (a). The display of the first Navy Jack is an authorized exception to section 1258 of reference (a). Ships and craft of the Navy authorized to fly the first Navy Jack will receive an issue of four flags per ship through a special distribution.

    Gordon R. England

    Distribution:
    SNDL Parts 1 and 2

    History behind it.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadsden_flag

Funny, when there was a election for new senator in my state, Mass. Many Republican supporters waved this "Don't tread on me!" flags to show support in Republican senator. Also it was kind of "silent protest" against Obama administration.

    http://cofcc.org/2009/01/will-freedom-liberty-survive-obama/

So I wonder if it is the real reason US military fly this flag once again? lol!

Note: I apologize if I made political remarks, if anyone feel that we should edit it, I can do that.

Yup, those flags have quite a history. Amazing though. But I don't think it's a silent protest at all, people are being heard. But yes, I'm sure it's not politics to fly this flag, it's just patriotism.

It would be cool if you actually make a thread about AOR-1 in this forum. Cheers.

Oh, dont you worry my friend, I was already planning to. I have a set of the "Field, Navy Custom" by Crye Precision on the way. I just sent the paypal in, I will be getting the Shirt, Pants and Boonie, and then maybe some pouches when my next paycheck comes through. I will go through the history and current use of AOR1 and AOR2 as well as a comparison with Desert MARPAT.

Here is one of my AOR-1 shirts. This one has been modified by the addition of velcro for name tape, US Navy, and the SEAL trident.

Navy Cmdr. Leonard V. Remias, Kunar Provincial Reconstruction Team commander, attaches the newly authorized "Don't Tread On Me" jack to a U.S. Navy member assigned to the PRT at Camp Wright in Asadabad, Afghanistan, Sept. 9. U.S. Gen. Stanley McCrystal, International Security Assistance Force and United States Forces-Afghanistan commander, authorized Navy people to wear the patch based on the "Gadsden flag" on their Army Combat Uniforms effective, Aug. 2 2009

It's not AOR1 actually, this shirt is an Blackhawk HPFU, the color is "DM3 digital desert", which have a very slight different pattern and color.

Great picture! Navy guy wearing the 82nd AB patch and this Dont Tread on Me patch. One thing about O2 is that it seems standards on uniforms are a bit lax and I cant image collectors in 40 or 50 years trying to figure out that structure!!

The use of velcro will give future collectors fits. Anybody can make anything possible with the velcro on the typical ACU.
