    1st BN. 5th Marines Grouping

Post by nkomo on Tue Mar 02, 2010 12:06 am

I picked this grouping up recently. It belonged to a Marine who was part of the 1st Bn. 5th Marines and just recently got out. He was part of the First Battle of Fallujah, Ar-Ramadi, and served in Afghanistan recently. This grouping included a complete Desert MARPAT, four pogs, a Blackhawk pistol rentention laynard, Marine LWH with name tape, and maps.

The uniforms are early manufactures and are called the MCCUU (Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform).

The LWH is dated 11/04, so wouldn't have been used in the First Battle of Fallujah, but would have been used on his tour in Ar-Ramadi. It has the early suspension system, rather than the later version with the pads.

The pogs are dated 2003 and 2004. One features the Tuskeegee Airman and the other two Marines in dress blues.

The pistol retention laynard appears to be an earlier Blackhawk piece. It has been used heavily and has 100 MPH tape around part of it.

Here is some information about the 1st BN. 5th Marines during OIF and OEF.

"The battalion deployed to Kuwait in 2003 to become part of the invasion force that ousted Saddam Hussein. They returned again to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in early 2004 for security and stabilization operations in Al Anbar Province. In March 2004, the battalion, this time attached to the 1st Marine Regiment along with several other units, participated in Operation Vigilant Resolve in the restive city of Fallujah. They were deployed a third time in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, one of only two Marine Corps infantry battalions to do so at the time, in the city of Ar Ramadi, capital of Al Anbar Province between March and October 2005.

1/5 deployed to Afghanistan in May 2009 as part of Task Force Leatherneck and conducted combat operations in Helmand province."

I'm not sure if you could tell from the original picture I posted, but there are some L shaped tears in the back part of the helmet. I THINK this is from where the combat goggles were zip-tied to the back of the helmet with plastic ties. It was a relatively common practice early on from what I understand.

Tyler, same here. Though I do find some nice modern stuff occasionally in surplus stores. However 80% of modern stuff I got is from ebay or online buddies.

    Paul,
Military bases are the best place to find stuff right now. Soldiers are always selling their stuff off to supplement their meager incomes.

Like the smart Vietnam collectors of the 1970's.....we are on the ground floor of this hobby and can find incredible things for CHEAP. These incredible finds will eventually turn into the "high dollar" items of tomorrow. Personally....I'm not into it for the money. I just like collecting and preserving history. Very Happy

    Arch,
While I was poking around a few sites, I found a picture of US Marines wearing ALICE clips on thier helmet covers to hold thier goggles and the like on thier helmets. Just an interesting side note since so many different objects have been used to keep all of the stuff together on the helmet (zip ties, caribeaners, string, alice clips)
