Chicom: Chinese Chest Rig for AK

Post by Mercenary25 on Wed Aug 31, 2011 2:28 pm

The chest rig is known as Chicom chest rig. Probably in short of "Chinese Communist". Funny thing is it was very popular with SOG during the Vietnam War and apparently it was still being used by SF during early days of OEF and maybe OIF. It was also used by insurgents, Taliban, Afghanistan Northern Alliance fighters. It is more than abundance in the surplus stores and online stores all over, usually being sold for dirty cheap (about $10-15). Normally overlooked by collectors because they are "Chinese junks" but little did they realize that they could be used as an example of what SF worn and would make a great simple display.

I don't have one in my collection yet but if someone does, please post it!

Very good thread, Merc! These chest rigs are often overlooked by US collectors, as many are not aware that the SF and CIA used these quite extensively during the early parts of OEF. Thanks for bringing that to our attention!

Thanks, Gary. This is the same mysterious one I posted over on IACMC. One of my saltier finds, for sure. Laughing

Here's one of mine. This was used by a member of 3rd SFG(A) during an early OEF deployment. Note that the small pouch on the far right side is a darker green that the others. It is also constructed of a heavier material and almost appears to be waterproofed or treated. Although different in appearance the pouch appears to be original to the piece. Note that the reverse has been modified by adding a softer solid green cloth covering the entire back of the rig. The veteran indicated the ANA men had asked to borrow the rig and when they brought it back to him it had the green cloth added.

Great rigs guys! When i head home on leave il post mine. not US used but straight out of an insurgent cache. These are also very popular with the ANA, they are a bit of a status symbol.

    Cheers
