Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan

Post by nkomo on Wed Aug 03, 2011 2:59 pm

Afghan made CJSOTF - Afghanistan patch.

Here is some information about the CJSOTF-Afghanistan:

Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan

This task force rotates between the 3rd and 7th Special Forces Groups. The 7th Group, commanded by Col. Sean Mulholland, replaced the 3rd Group in late July 2009. The task force is partnered with six Afghan commando units.

Thanks for showing this patch, if I see one again, I will snap it up Wink

Arch got things going with an outstanding example so I thought I would add a couple from my collection as well. I didn't realize that there was this many variations until I had them out and started looking. Here is a very early version of the patch. I'm convinced this is the first CJSOTF-A insignia pattern. This patch came from the same JSOC operator that I have mentioned in other posts. Note the US Master Parachutist badge and special operations crossed arrows. Also of interest is the use of Operation Enduring Freedom at the bottom of the patch. This patch is theatre made in Afghanistan.

Here is another version of the patch also theatre made in Afghanistan. Again, we have the US Master Parachutist badge but we have added a sword to go with the crossed arrows and also the National flag of Afghanistan to the central design. Lastly the outline of Afghanistan is included in their national colors, Note that the outline of Afghanistan extends outside the diameter of the patch.

First version of the "MACVSOG Type" CJSOTF-A patch that I was able to acquire. This patch was theatre made at a shop near Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan. Skull with Pakol, crossed arrows over red and yellow shell burst. Anchor and banner below skull with Afghanistan National flag at top. The patch is backed with black velcro.

A more detailed version very similar to the patch in Post #4 but this example is not theatre made. Again, we have the US Master Parachutist badge, sword/dagger and National flag of Afghanistan to the central design. Outline of Afghanistan is included in their national colors but is does not extend past the area of the round double border. This patch has been reproduced (faked) in large numbers.

Another version of the "MACVSOG Type" CJSOTF-A patch. This example was produced in Turkey and sold/purchased in Afghanistan. Does not have quite the detail of the previous example. Note the skull and head covering. There are also differences in the banner, anchor and Afghan National flag.

Example from my collection of a very similar patch to what Arch posted to get this thread started. Obviously influenced by the USSF SSI arrowhead design with the CJSOTF vertical and AFG across the base. The colors are a bit different than the previous example especially notable in the color of the Afghanistan outline. This patch is theatre made in Afghanistan and black velcro backed.

A more detailed version very similar to the previous MACVSOG type patches. This example is not theatre made and has been heavily faked and reproduced in large numbers. Note the extreme detail to the skull, headwear, and crossed arrows. Same with the red and yellow shell burst, anchor, banner and Afghanistan National flag. High quality patch.

Another interesting variation that uses central themes and designs frequently encountered in Afghanistan National Army insignia. Most noticeable in the center design of crossed rifle, scimitar, with laurel leaves over the outline of Afghanistan in her national colors. Top rocker states PRESENCE - PATIENCE - PERSISTENCE and THROUGH, WITH, & BY to the bottom rocker. Scarce pattern, theatre made in Afghanistan ad mounted on black velcro.

Another variation of the first type "MACVSOG" CJSOTF-A insignia as seen in Post #5. This example was also theatre made at a shop near Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan and features skull with Pakol, crossed arrows over red and yellow shell burst. Anchor and banner below skull with Afghanistan National flag at top. Essentially the same as Post #5 except the insignia is roughly "flag size and shaped." The patch is backed with black velcro.

Thought this photograph would look good posted here as it shows the CJSOTF-A pictured above in wear. These are 19th SFG(A) operators in CQB training.

    Hello
I have this variant of the patch with letters EDD - for Explosives Detecting Dogs Team.
I am note sure if the patch was made for CJSOTF-A EDD Team (Do they use dogs??). Maybe somebody else used this pattern?
Maybe anybody will have additional info.

Notice the guy in the truck is wearing black body armor. Any idea what time period this would be from, Lance?

Hoping some of the geardos came chime in here, but is the SF guy wearing an Afghan plate carrier?

Ha. Thanks Clete. I guess I need to look harder. One of my co-workers is retired ST6 so I may need to see what he has.

Don't feel bad, Rob. I hardly ever find those patches when I go to the bases either. I think collectors look for the patches more often than they do gear or uniforms.

Most of what I find have had the patches removed and I don't find them loose either. I don't buy any of this stuff on-line either so that limits my sources too.

    Rob,
The one I posted above came directly from a friend of mine in the 173rd ABN who picked up the patch while doing a tour in Afghanistan.

Honestly, I can count on two hands how many loose theatre made patches I have found in all the years I've been collecting.

Yea, I guess I just need to start beating the bushes a little harder. With 5 SEAL teams within 15 miles of my house there has got to be some patches floating around out there. Actually, I think I just found a source for some SEAL patches. I'll keep you posted.

Do keep us posted...with all the SEAL cammies especially the mods you`ve been getting in your area I`m sure you`ll bump into one.I do believe SEAL platoon patches are one of the rarest modern patches right now.Googling them does`nt just cut it.All that comes out are the usual ebay commercial copies but try searching for SF patches and you come out with heaps.

    Arch et al,

I think the photo is early OEF but can only base that on a few observations. A couple of points I would make. I know the person who had the first of the shell burst CJSOTF-A patches made and that was in 2002. That is when they would have started showing up in the SOF community. He is wearing an early modified BDU, no velcro on sleeve pocket body, IR tab, straight placed unmodified chest pockets with name velcro. His plate carrier conforms to the look of those made by Afghanistan companies. The man in the back is wearing what appears to be commercial black body armor. Safariland? Also note the lack for conformity of the gear on the ANA men. Just my feel for it that it is from the early stages of OEF.
