    SECDET patches

Post by 2ndAIF on Mon Jun 20, 2011 4:48 am

Heres my collection of Australian SECDET patches patches from different rotations in Iraq, as far as I or anyone else knows the first rotation to have their own patch was rot#7

Anyway to get the ball rolling heres a bit of info on SECDET from Wikipedia.

The Security Detachment Iraq (SECDET Iraq) is the final component of Australia's contribution to coalition operations in Iraq. SECDET is based on an Australian Army combined arms combat team consisting of an infantry company group and a troop of cavalry which operates the Australian Light Armoured (ASLAV) vehicles. Duties include static security guarding at the Australian Embassy, Baghdad and the protection of Australian diplomats and vehicle convoys. Despite the drawdown in Australian forces, SECDET remains in Iraq under Operation Kruger with a strength of approximately 80 personnel.

SECDET-10 original order patches, these were never worn as they were replaced by the SECDET-10 patch with the lion on it (that I have posted above) before the order could be made and sent to Iraq, which is a shame as they are a really nice patch.

    2 White variations.

No worries Gary Im glad you like mate. Yeah the SECDET 10 patches are great heres the story behind them.

Credit Goes to Steve O'Dell for this explanation

These patches are a great story in their own right. Designed, paid for and delivered as the official SECDET 10 patches, these beautiful patches were railroaded into obscurity by a second patch acquisition which was issued prior to departure for Iraq. These patches in 2 varieties of white, a subdued background and maroon (representing the 3 RAR (Para) component) bring to life the Babylonian/ Assyrian God Marduk in his mythilogical 'Good versus Evil' duel with the God Tiamat for control of the world. As an interesting footnote, The Assyrians/ Sumerian/ Babylonian culture developed mathematical values for musical notes and the note corresponding to 10 became the numerical identity of none other than Marduk in their mythology. Thus, this number corresponding to SECDET 10, and the fact it represents the triumph of good over evil, as well as the visual beauty of these patches, it is a shame they were never issued as sanctioned.

Yeah you are correct it is a German shield, the crew commander of the ASLAV that had these patches made for himself and his crew had German heritage, A mate of mine knows him and is also in the same unit. He is going to ask him for me what the full story is behind these patches. I will post here what I find out.

    Incidents.

SECDET-4 had a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) detonate across the street from their HQ during their tour. SECDET-4 was also involved in a serious accident when an ASLAV rolled at high speed.

SECDET-5 was involved in a VBIED attack on 25 October 2004, just short of an International Zone checkpoint, with the patrol suffering four wounded in action and serious damage to an ASLAV-25.

SECDET-5 was also involved in two incidents in the northern city of Tall Afar on 8 and 10 December 2004, when 3 Troop, A Squadron of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment was ambushed by insurgents using small arms and rocket propelled grenades. During the subsequent firefight, the insurgents suffered injuries and casualties, however no damage was inflicted on the Australian patrol.

SECDET-6 had a VBIED detonate both on an ASLAV patrol on Route Irish and also on their HQ in Baghdad during their tour.

Private Jacob Kovco, Australia's only fatality of the Iraq conflict, was a member of SECDET-9 in 2006.

I guessed they were some sort of mythological symbols, the number thing is a bit too much for my head, but I think the battle of good over evil is very symbolic in it's self Wink
