    ODA numbers on patches?

    Post by Mercenary25 on Sat Jan 01, 2011 1:00 pm

    I remember somewhere on this forum we discussed about four numbered ODA (Operational Detachment Alpha) patches could be fake/fanasty piece or for Iraqi Special Forces; that only three numbers existed. (I know generally ODA patches being sold are just novelty patches made available to commercial, but fun to collect though)I have recently purchased one theatre made ODA patch that are four numbered instead of typical three numbered.

    Assigned four ODAs (former FA Team) to each ODB (former FB Team) for a total of 12 ODAs per SF Company (ODC) the former FC TEAM.

    The new numbering system which consisted of: First number represents the group, second number represents the battalion, and last two numbers are for the team number. Some team numbers happened to be two digits, therefore four numbered ODA?

    I'm sure some members here are well aware of ODA numbering system could shine a light on it?

    Here is a photo of Iraqi Special Forces wearing four numbered ODA patch. Could've he been assigned to US ODA 2084?

    HERRING, JAMES B.
    Citation:
    The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to James B. Herring, Chief Warrant Officer Four (CWO-4), U.S. Army, for gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy forces while serving as the Detachment Commander for Operational Detachment Alpha 2084 (ODA-2084), Special Operations Task Force-North, during combat operations in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, on 23 December 2006, near Baqubah, Iraq. Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring's heroism and bravery under intense enemy fire was directly responsible for the safety and well being of a combined twenty-three man US-Iraqi force. His actions reflect the highest credit upon himself, the Special Operations Central Command, and the United States Army.

    NARRATIVE TO ACCOMPANY AWARD:
    Chief Warrant Officer James B. Herring distinguished himself through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy forces near Baqubah, Iraq on 23 December 2006, while serving as the Detachment Commander for Operational Detachment Alpha 2084 (ODA-2084), Special Operations Task Force-North, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring's heroism and bravery under intense enemy fire was directly responsible for the safety and well being of a combined twenty-three man US-Iraqi force. While searching the village of Tahrir for a Sunni-Arab insurgent cell responsible for multiple complex attacks against Coalition Forces operating in the area, the combined force was caught in a complex ambush by approximately twenty insurgents firing machine guns, rifles, and rocket propelled grenades. Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring was the Ground Force Commander and riding in the lead vehicle of the five vehicle patrol. As the convoy moved along a narrow road between two-story buildings, three insurgents opened fire with machine guns on his vehicle. He directed the driver to continue to move forward as the turret gunner engaged and killed the insurgents. As the vehicle moved it was engaged by more than twenty insurgents from a nearby concrete wall from a distance of less than thirty feet. The turret gunner engaged the insurgents with machine gun fire. During this exchange, enemy rounds penetrated the vehicle, critically wounding the driver. As the vehicle came to a stop, Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring observed several insurgents armed with machine guns, firing on his vehicle from a distance of less than fifty meters. Realizing that the turret gunner was facing the opposite direction, Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring dismounted the vehicle and engaged the enemy forces with rifle fire, killing two enemy machine gunners. The ferocity of his action forced the other insurgents to abandon their positions and flee to nearby buildings. An immobilized Iraqi vehicle blocked the remaining convoy vehicles from advancing to support, and Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring's vehicle was alone against the larger enemy force. Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring then realized that the driver was critically wounded, immobile, and in need of immediate medical care. With complete disregard for his personal safety and under constant well-aimed small arms and machine gun fire, and a volley of rocket propelled grenades, Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring exited the relative safety of the vehicle for a second time. He was knocked to the ground by the concussion of an impacting rocket propelled grenade, but got up and continued to fire and maneuver, alone, with only his vehicle gunner to provide suppressive fire to get to the driver' s side. There he removed the wounded driver from the vehicle, and after placing him in the rear seat so that the medic could continue treatment, he climbed into the driver's seat, advised his higher headquarters of the situation, called for medical evacuation, and began to maneuver the vehicle out of the kill zone. Though the heavily damaged ballistic windshield obscured his view, Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring led the combined ground assault force through the narrow side streets of Tahrir and back to Forward Operating Base Gabe. As a result of his decisive and heroic actions, Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring swung the tide of the engagement against a prepared enemy, killing many, and preventing other members of the combined force from being killed or wounded. His gallant action and total disregard for his personal well being directly saved the other four men in his vehicle from certain serious injury or death. Chief Warrant Officer Three Herring's actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of heroic military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Special Operations Task Force-North, Special Operations Command Central, and the United States Army.

    I spoke you about ODA and how translate the 3 number ODA and ODB in full unit name. It was on USMF :

    http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=81169

    And yes, they added one number during OIF and OEF because they grow number of special forces units (adding BTN in some SFG) that's why we have 3 and 4 numbers ODA. But I only know the 3 number system. In early OIF, it was only 3 numbers Operational Detachment. By example ODA 525 entered early in Iraq.

    Majorities of patches are fake/commercial junks (seller understand that majorities of young/airsofter search SF items, that's why they developped a commercial market of SF patches and since, there's thousands on ebay). But well, SFG can wear everything they want, so any patch can be good. That's why I always say it's not interesting to collect SFG items...

    Well, so there's olf numerotation ODA, with 3 numbers and current with 4 numbers (since August 2008 I think).

    Here's the explanation for old system (in application during the beginning of OEF and OIF) :

    - The first number refer to Group - Ex.: ODA 525

    "0" refers to 10 Special Forces Group (example : ODA 074,...).
    "1" refers to 1st Special Forces Group (example : ODA 172,...)
    "3" refers to 3rd Special Forces Group (example : ODA 373,...)
    "5" refers to 5th Special forces Group (examples : ODA 525, ODA 555,...)
    "7" refers to 7th Special Forces Group (example : ODA 774,...)
    "11" refers to 11th Special Force Group - deactivated (example : ODA 1175,...)
    "20" refers to 20th Special forces Group (example : ODA 2092,...)

    - second number is a combination between Battalion & Company (see below) - Ex. : ODA 525

    ////////Alpha /////////// Bravo //////////// Charlie [= Company]
    1 = 1st Battalion / 2 = 1st Battalion / 3 =1st Battalion
    4 =2nd Battalion / 5 =2 nd Battalion / 6 =2nd Battalion
    7 = 3rd Battalion / 8 = 3rd Battalion / 9=3rd Battalion

    - third number is Team - Ex. : ODA 525

    0 = ODB
    1 = team 1 (Direct Action ?- ODA)
    2 = team 2 (Mountains Warfare ? - ODA)
    3 = team 3 (Boat Assault ? - ODA)
    4 = team 4 (HAHO/HALO - ODA)
    5 = team 5 (scuba/combat diver - ODA).

    And at this point, you can also differenciate ODA and ODB :

    ODA = Operatioonal Detachment Alpha / A-team. It's the basic SF unit.

    ODB (= Operational Detachment Beta /B Detachment / B team / SFOD-B ) : it's SF company headquarters. For ODB, the last number is always "0"

    ODC = provides command and control, and staff planning and supervision for SF battalion operations and administration.

    Example : ODA 524.

    The first number "5" refer to Special forces Group, so 5th Special Forces Group.
    The second number "2" is a combination between battalion and company. You can see that number "2" refer to "bravo company, 1st Battalion".
    And the third number "4" refer to team. Team 4 are usually specialized in Halo capabilites

    And you can find some others example of ODA numbers in this book : http://books.google.be/books?id=CtPxOn7FLR...774&f=false. There's also the full denomination .

    Apparently, the 4 numbers ODA are post-2008 :

    "In 2008, the U.S Army Special Forces Command (SFC) began the expansion of the basic force structure of the active-duty Special Forces Groups (SFGs). Beginning in August 2008, SFC stood up the first of five new SF battalions that make up its gains under the Zone 4 growth plan that came about after the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR). In addition, SFC got new leadership at headquarters and maintained its roles and missions around the globe in what was a busy and interesting year.". See more informations about it :
    http://www.defensemedianetwork.com/stories/sfc-year-in-review-2008-2009/

    Number of battalions grow up in some Special Forces Groups, so they had to change the numerotation system, adding one number. That's why we have now 4 numbers ODA and ODB.

The ceremony will take place on the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) parade field at 9:30 a.m. Lt. Col. Fleming T. Sullivan will assume command at this time. The development and activation of additional Special Forces battalions allows for greater support of current missions and flexibility around the globe. Additionally, it provides relief to our soldiers who have been continuously deployed since 2001. Operational experience over the last several years has validated the Special Forces mission sets, demonstrating their specific relevancy and application in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 3rd Group currently focuses primarily on operations in Afghanistan."

    "FORT CARSON, Colorado The proud family of 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) has another member. During the ceremony on 19th August this year, held at Manhart Field, the 4th Battalion of 10th SFG (A) was activated. This unit, when it reaches (its or delete "it" entirely) full strength during 2011, will consist of 400 Special Forces Soldiers. Command over them is assigned to Lieutenant Colonel John Taft, with Command Sergeant Major Luis Puka.

    “In standing up this battalion, we’ve increased the combat power of 10th Special Forces Group and of the Special Operations community overall and, of course, the overall combat power of our Army,” said CSM Puka for the USASOC News service.

    In his speech during the ceremony, Commander of 10th SFG (A), Colonel Sean Swindell heaped praise on the team that coordinated the Battalion's activation. “They have created a perfect blend of experienced officers and noncommissioned officers along with those fresh out of the Special Forces Qualification Course in order to satisfy the current global need for Special Forces,” COL Swindell said. “[The battalion will] provide more Soldiers to support ongoing missions around the world and needed relief to the Special Forces units that have been continuously deployed since 9/11.”

    “Today’s activation ceremony is a step into the future for 10th Group,” he said. “However, we would be remiss not to link this battalion to our past, the First Special Service Force, the Office of Strategic Services and Colonel Aaron Bank. Using the training strategies and the lessons learned during World War II by Colonel Bank, I direct 4th Battalion leaders to create an elite unit of men, skilled in foreign languages to interface with indigenous forces, the arts of sabotage and stealth tactics, the use of explosives for demolition, amphibious warfare, rock climbing, desert warfare, mountain fighting and ski troops.”

    Bank is considered to be the father of Special Forces and organized the 10th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, N.C., in 1952."

    Based on my recent find, the current number are :

    ODA 5113 = Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group - Fort Campbell (Kentucky)

    So :

    We have decided to bring this thread back. All that the Adminstration asks is that no member posts specefic information about the location of any ODA or shares any information that could endanger the lives of our soldiers overseas. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.

    Pierre, any idea what is ODA 9214? I just found a SF T-shirt with this number.

    Based on my theory, it's Team 4, Co A, 2nd Btn, 19th SFG (NG). But I found nothing about them. I don't know if they were deplpoyed in Afghanistan or Iraq and I didn't find their specialty (possibly FreeFall / HAHO-HALO ?).

    If I did no error, before 2008 they were ODA 944, and then they were deployed in Kuwait (2002) and Iraq (2005-2006). No information for Afghanistan.

    But please, show your t-shirt !! Very Happy

    Your insignia is ODB 330 (so Operational Detachment Bravo, Company C, 1st Btn, 3rd SFG). The new number for this one would be ODB 3130.

    I can just tell you their company was deployed in Afghanistan (in 2004 and during summer 2010). I've nothing more about them...

    How do you know that it's an ODB and not an ODA? Because of the "0"?

    Yes absolutely. "0" is always an ODB. All ODA have a number between 1 to 6 (Team 1, Team 2,..) and this number is a reference to their specialty (Free Fall, Scuba diver, mountains warfare,...).

    The ODB is a kind of HHC.

    Thanks for your help matfar (I know where you get your 3rd SFG list, I also found it, and also the one of 5th SFG) ! For others ODA and ODB, I search one by one Razz

    I'll do one full topic about SF at this link :

    http://oefoif.forumotion.net/t1914-special-forces-group-sfg

    I'll only focus on Special Forces Group (as a sub-unit of the Army Special Operations Command) but if you want make the others branch (AFSOC,...) feel free to do !
